I’ve decided to create a series on golfing the Monterey Peninsula. This is the first of what will eventually cover each golf course we have. I’m excited to improve my skills on the course and experience all the world class golf that our Peninsula has to offer.

If I were to describe Carmel Valley Ranch’s back 9 in one world, “towering” is the first that comes to mind. There is one particular hole that stands out amongst the rest – hole 11 – par 4. You’re teeing off from the very top of CVR I believe near Fairway Lane and you are absolutely towering over the fairway and the green. The fairway is wide, so you feel free to swing hard and perform possibly one of the most memorable drives of your golf career. As a golfer motivated to break 100, there is also the feeling of not wanting to whiff or shank during such a significant moment. It’s a thrill to say the least. Fortunately, I hit the exact shot I wanted and had an easy wedge approach into the green. Certainly one of my most favorite moments in golf.

Towering Hole 11

One of the more challenging holes was #12 where after a straight forward tee shot, the fairway appears to drop off and you don’t have vision of where it goes or where you need to put the ball. After laying up, I found that it is a dramatic drop and would have taken a very skilled iron shot to get it on the green and avoid trouble in the bunker. One of the more elusive golf holes I’ve played.

The front 9 is flat and meanders through the water features, which offers a challenge, but overall pretty manageable. The fairways are stunning, and the weather is so nice in Carmel Valley.

This course is sure to please. I hope you get a chance to try it!
